Kolkata: Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and Lok Sabha MP Kalyan Banerjee brought a lighthearted moment to the House on Wednesday during a spirited interaction with BJP MP Jagdambika Pal, who was presiding over the session in place of Om Birla.
While Banerjee was addressing the House, Pal indicated that his allotted time had ended. In response, Banerjee quipped, “Outside, they call me a darling, but here, I am not given time to speak.” The remark drew smiles and laughter from fellow MPs, including TMC colleague Yusuf Pathan, highlighting Banerjee’s flair for humor even in parliamentary proceedings.
This incident comes amid ongoing tensions between the opposition, led by Congress, and the ruling coalition, as opposition parties have accused the government of denying them adequate speaking time following the presentation of the Union Budget. Notably, the opposition had also moved a no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, prompting him to temporarily step aside from his responsibilities.
A seasoned advocate by profession, Kalyan Banerjee was re-elected in 2024 from the Shrirampur constituency in West Bengal for the fourth consecutive term. Known for his wit, he had previously courted controversy for mimicking Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar during a parliamentary session last year.
