Mumbai: A shocking incident in Chembur’s Vashi Naka area has left devotees stunned after a statue of Goddess Kali was dressed in attire resembling Mother Mary at a local Kali Mata temple. The unusual sight caused confusion and anger among worshippers, prompting police intervention and the arrest of the temple priest.
The Incident
Devotees visiting the temple were taken aback upon seeing the idol of Goddess Kali adorned in clothes resembling Mother Mary. The incident triggered outrage among local devotees and Hindu organizations, who gathered at the temple to protest and demanded strict action. A First Information Report (FIR) was promptly filed at the RCF police station.
Priest’s Explanation
When questioned, the priest reportedly claimed that Goddess Kali appeared in his dream and instructed him to dress her as Mother Mary. However, this explanation failed to satisfy devotees and members of local religious organizations, who feared the act could disrupt social harmony.
Allegations of Monetary Influence
Some locals alleged that the priest, identified as Ramesh, was influenced by unknown individuals to carry out this act and may have been paid to do so. Following the outrage, he was handed over to the RCF police by members of local groups.
Police Action
The priest was presented in court and placed in two-day police custody. Authorities are investigating who instructed him to dress the Kali Mata idol in the attire of Mother Mary and whether any financial inducement was involved.
