Kalbelia Dance Enchants Guests at Pravasi Rajasthani Day Celebration

Jaipur: The traditional Kalbelia dance of Rajasthan, recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage, captivated audiences during the Pravasi Rajasthani Day celebrations in Jaipur. Known for its snake-like movements, vibrant costumes, and rich folk elements, the dance mesmerized both domestic and international attendees.

The Snake Connection

Originating from the Kalbelia community, historically associated with snake-catching, the dance mimics the graceful, slithering movements of snakes. The performers’ distinctive gestures and attire are inspired by serpentine motion, giving rise to the belief that the dance can control snakes. Traditionally, women perform the dance while men play accompanying musical instruments.

Costumes include embroidered ghagras and silver jewelry, adding to the visual charm and cultural significance. Renowned artist Padma Shri awardee Gulabo Sapera has been instrumental in popularizing this art form globally.

Cultural Spotlight at Pravasi Rajasthani Day

At the Jaipur event held at JECC, Gulabo Sapera and her team presented a mesmerizing performance, highlighting the richness of Rajasthani folk culture. The audience, including Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav, Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, and several state and central ministers, were left spellbound by the performance.

The Kalbelia dance not only entertained but also served as a vibrant showcase of Rajasthan’s unique cultural heritage, strengthening the bond with Rajasthani expatriates.
