
Ranchi: Justice Mahesh Sharadchandra Sonak of the Bombay High Court has been appointed as the Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court. The Supreme Court Collegium recommended his name to the Central Government, which has now approved the appointment. Justice Sonak will succeed Chief Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan, who is set to retire on 8 January 2026.
Who is Justice M.S. Sonak?
Born on 28 November 1964, Justice Sonak hails from Panaji, Goa. He completed his early education at Don Bosco High School, Panaji, followed by a B.Sc. degree from Dhempe College of Arts and Science. He then pursued law at Law College, Panaji, graduating with first-class honors. Justice Sonak also earned a diploma in Portuguese from the Xavier Centre of Historical Research.
Legal Career and Expertise
Justice Sonak enrolled as an advocate with the Maharashtra & Goa Bar Council in 1988. He practiced extensively at the Panaji Bench of Bombay High Court, specializing in civil and constitutional law, labor and service law, environmental law, commercial tax law, company law, and public interest litigation. He is also known for taking up several social causes.
Service to Central and State Governments
Throughout his career, Justice Sonak served as Additional Solicitor General for the Central Government and later as Special Government Pleader for the State Government, providing legal assistance to various corporations. On 21 June 2013, he was appointed Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court, eventually rising to the position of second senior-most judge before this elevation.
With his appointment, Justice Sonak brings decades of legal expertise, administrative experience, and a strong connection to Goa to the helm of Jharkhand High Court, promising robust leadership for the judiciary in the state.
