Dhanbad: A newborn stolen from Shaheed Nirmal Mahto Medical College and Hospital (SNMMCH) in Dhanbad over the weekend has been safely recovered, police confirmed. Three suspects, including a woman who disguised herself as a nurse, have been arrested, while questioning of other hospital staff and potential accomplices continues.
Woman in Nurse Disguise Under Suspicion
The incident occurred after Shaligram Marandi admitted his wife Sarita Marandi to the hospital for delivery on 24 December. Sarita gave birth to a son on 25 December. During the night between Saturday and Sunday, a woman posing as a nurse entered the gynecology ward under the pretext of checking the newborn. She reportedly took the baby from Sarita’s mother and left the ward, never returning with the child. Family members alleged negligence on the part of the hospital, raising an alarm after a long wait.
CCTV Footage Leads to Breakthrough
Acting on the complaint, police from the Saryadhela police station reviewed CCTV footage and began an investigation. Based on a tip-off, raids were conducted in East Basuria and Reguni, Bhuli, leading to the safe recovery of the baby late at night. Three suspects, including the woman, were arrested, and hospital outsourcing employee Mohammad Hasim is being questioned regarding his role.
Monetary Motive Behind the Crime
Police stated that the suspects had been paid money in exchange for the theft. The newborn is currently under medical supervision and will be reunited with the mother once formalities are completed. Authorities are still searching for two other individuals involved in the gang. The hospital’s security arrangements and staff involvement are also under investigation.
