JNU Issues 48-Hour Deadline to Remove Illegal Constructions, Warns Wardens

New Delhi, February 3:
Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has issued a circular directing all hostel wardens to remove unauthorized constructions within and around their official accommodations within 48 hours. The move comes after reports emerged of a warden constructing an illegal room in the lawn of their government-provided housing for domestic help.

The university administration has warned that failure to comply will invite strict disciplinary action. According to the circular issued by the Dean of Students’ Office, certain wardens have undertaken unauthorized construction activities—both temporary and permanent—inside hostel premises. All employees have been repeatedly advised to avoid such activities and maintain the integrity of shared university spaces.

Strict Enforcement Cited

The circular emphasized that such constructions are strictly prohibited under the university’s housing rules. Violators may face removal from wardenship and other disciplinary actions. In a separate notice, the Deputy Registrar (Estate) warned that non-compliance would compel the university to initiate action under applicable laws and regulations without further notice.

Reason Behind the Action

The directive aims to uphold discipline, ensure security, and maintain orderly functioning within the campus. On January 31, TOI reported that a warden of Periyar Hostel allegedly built an unauthorized room on the lawn of their official residence without administrative approval, causing concerns among students over misuse of official space.
