Jitu Patwari Meets Sumitra Mahajan in Indore: A Rare Display of Political Courtesy with Strategic Undertones

Indore, January 17, 2026: In a rare display of political civility in Madhya Pradesh, Congress state president Jitu Patwari met senior BJP leader and former Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan at her residence in Indore on Friday. The discussion, transcending party lines, focused on the city’s contaminated water crisis, with Mahajan offering advice like a senior sibling and Patwari acknowledging the need for collaborative action for public welfare.

Rising Above Politics

Patwari emphasized that the Baghirathpura water contamination incident is not a political matter, but a serious public health concern. “Large portions of drinking water in Madhya Pradesh are contaminated. It is everyone’s responsibility to rise above politics and ensure clean water for the people,” he said. Speaking to the media, Patwari underscored that ensuring safe drinking water in Indore is more important than verbal exchanges or political blame games.

Guidance from Sumitra Mahajan

Sumitra Mahajan advised Patwari that sitting together collectively to discuss solutions and presenting recommendations to the government would be the most effective approach. She also highlighted that a strong opposition is vital in a functioning democracy. Patwari responded respectfully: “‘Tai, opposition has its place, but the water problem is bigger. We will continue to oppose where necessary, but we must address this crisis collaboratively.’”

Political Implications

While the meeting is being described publicly as a courteous interaction, political observers see a deeper strategic angle. Ahead of Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Indore, Patwari’s engagement with Mahajan and her positive remark—“Jitu is a good boy”—strengthens his image in the city, countering BJP narratives that often portray him as aggressive or negative.

Mahajan’s counsel on constructive opposition also indirectly highlights lapses of the local administration and the state government, signaling to factions within BJP that silence on civic issues may not go unnoticed. In essence, Patwari has positioned himself strategically by garnering Mahajan’s support and goodwill before high-profile political activity in the city.
