
Ranchi, Jharkhand: A week after the brutal killing of Ranjit Mahto in Khunti district, police have uncovered the shocking motive behind the murder. Investigations reveal that family rivalry and resentment over a second marriage led to the deadly conspiracy.
Details of the Crime
The victim, Ranjit Mahto, a resident of Sonahatu, Ranchi, was found mutilated near Kadma Pond, Dahupidi area on October 31. The following day, authorities confirmed the body belonged to him. Mahto lived in a rented accommodation in Girjatoli, Mahavir Colony, Khunti town.
First Wife’s Involvement
According to SDPO Varun Kumar Rajak, Ranjit’s second marriage to Renu Devi enraged his first wife, Sugi Devi. Out of vengeance, she allegedly conspired with her nephew Sonu Mahto and two other accomplices to kill her husband.
Arrests and Confessions
Police successfully arrested Sugi Devi (Dahugut, Khunti) and Sonu Mahto (Amritpur). During interrogation, both confessed to their involvement in the murder. Sonu Mahto reportedly has a criminal record.
Police also recovered key evidence including a Bhujali (weapon), petrol bottles, and burnt clothing used during the crime, which the perpetrators had set on fire to destroy evidence.
Investigation Team and Ongoing Search
The case was cracked under the leadership of SDPO Varun Kumar Rajak with the support of Thana In-Charge Mohan Kumar, SI Sitaram Dangi, Aditya Kumar, ASI Anjana Mary Bara, technical staff, and armed forces personnel. Police continue to conduct raids to apprehend two other suspects involved in the conspiracy.
This shocking case has sent ripples through Khunti, raising concerns over domestic disputes escalating into extreme violence.
