Jharkhand to Become a ‘Green Hub’: CM Hemant Soren Signs Historic Partnership with Tata Steel in Davos

Ranchi, Jharkhand: In a landmark move at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Chief Minister Hemant Soren has spearheaded a transformative partnership between the Jharkhand government and Tata Steel Ltd., aimed at creating a ‘New Age Green Steel’ ecosystem in the state. The initiative outlines investments exceeding ₹11,000 crore, focused on a carbon-neutral future and generating large-scale employment opportunities.

Next-Generation Ironmaking
The investment primarily revolves around revolutionary ironmaking technologies, including HISARNA and EGMELT (Electrically Assisted Singe Gas Melter), with ₹7,000 crore earmarked for these projects. HISARNA, a proven technology, allows the use of domestic coal and lower-grade ores, reducing dependency on expensive imports while enhancing cost-efficiency. The technology can cut carbon dioxide emissions by up to 80% through carbon capture and storage. Following successful pilot tests in the Netherlands, Tata Steel plans to establish a commercial plant in Jamshedpur by 2030 with a capacity of 1 million tons per year.

EGMELT, a world-first solution, reduces coke usage and lowers carbon dioxide emissions by up to 50%, enhancing stability in conventional blast furnace operations. Together, these technologies position Jharkhand at the forefront of green steel manufacturing globally.

Strengthening Industrial Infrastructure
The investment package also includes ₹1,500 crore for a state-of-the-art Combi Mill and ₹2,600 crore for tinplate expansion, fostering economic stability, high-tech employment, and long-term competitiveness in a decarbonized industrial landscape. These initiatives establish Tata Steel and Jharkhand as first movers in large-scale green ironmaking, setting new benchmarks for domestic and global industrial leadership.

Sustainable Development in Harmony with Nature
This historic partnership underscores Jharkhand’s commitment to sustainable industrial growth, balancing economic progress with environmental stewardship. By integrating cutting-edge technologies, the state is promoting a new era of green economic development, ensuring that prosperity is built on environmental protection and technological excellence.

Opportunities for Youth and Industrial Tourism
Marking the 25th anniversary of Jharkhand’s formation, the agreement symbolizes the state’s transition from a traditional mineral-based economy to a global center for green innovation. The state government has also signed an MoU with Tata Steel to promote industrial tourism at mining and manufacturing sites, providing students and youth with exposure to cutting-edge green technologies.

Supporting Skill Development
During the meeting, Tata Steel’s MD & CEO T.V. Narendran lauded CM Soren’s proactive participation in Davos and emphasized the state’s rapid growth in education, manufacturing, and mining. CM Soren proposed Tata Steel’s adoption of ITI institutions in Jharkhand to make them employment- and market-oriented, a proposal the company warmly accepted. The delegation hosted CM Soren for a dinner at Tata Dome, Davos, highlighting the strategic importance of Jharkhand’s green industrial vision.
