Jharkhand: Surgical Gauze Left in Woman’s Abdomen After C-Section; Life Saved but She Faces Lifelong Pain

Koderma: A shocking case of medical negligence has come to light at Koderma Sadar Hospital, Jharkhand, turning a family’s joy into trauma. Khushboo Kumari, a resident of Rajdhanbar in Giridih district, reportedly had surgical gauze left inside her abdomen during a C-section performed by Dr. Abdul Rahman on July 11, 2025, putting her life at risk and rendering her unable to conceive in the future.

Three Months Later, Pain Reveals the Truth
Khushboo delivered a healthy baby and returned home in high spirits. However, after about three months, she began experiencing severe abdominal pain. Following medical advice in Gaya, an ultrasound revealed the horrifying truth: surgical gauze had been left inside her abdomen during the initial operation. Doctors warned that immediate surgery was necessary to save her life.

Family Forced to Sell Land for Emergency Treatment
With limited financial resources, Khushboo’s husband, Sanjay Kumar, sold family land and took heavy loans to fund her emergency operation on October 17 in Gaya. The follow-up surgery confirmed the gauze had indeed been left behind. While Khushboo survived, doctors informed the family that due to this negligence, she would never be able to conceive again, leaving the family devastated both mentally and financially.

Economic and Emotional Toll on the Family
The ordeal has severely impacted the family. Sanjay Kumar has lost his job, and they remain burdened with heavy debt. Desperate for justice, he has appealed to Koderma DC Rituraj for strict action against Dr. Rahman and financial support to help the family recover.

Hospital Response
Commenting on the matter, Civil Surgeon Dr. Anil Kumar of Koderma Sadar Hospital stated that no formal complaint has yet been received. He assured that a thorough investigation will be conducted upon receiving the application. He acknowledged that if the incident occurred, it represents a serious case of medical negligence, while also urging the public not to malign the hospital without evidence.
