Jharkhand MLA Jayram Mahto Raises Migrant Workers’ Deaths, Urges Government to Form Special Committee

Ranchi: During the Winter Session of the Jharkhand Assembly, MLA Jayram Mahto paid tribute to several prominent personalities who passed away since the last session, including actor Dharmendra, industrialist Gopichand Hinduja, and Pandit Channulal Mishra. He also raised the pressing issue of migrant workers’ deaths and delays in returning their bodies to families.

Speaking on a condolence motion, Mahto acknowledged the loss of notable figures, including former MP Salauddin Ansari, industrialists Ramchandra Rungta and Gopichand Hinduja, and others. He also mentioned tragic incidents affecting ordinary citizens, such as CRPF personnel Milan Singh Rajput, who died in a bus accident in Udhampur, and multiple fatalities during festivals and road accidents across the country, including Bihar and Qataras BCL area.

Migrant workers’ plight
Mahto highlighted that over the past 15 days, 16 migrant workers from his constituency had passed away, with some bodies still not returned to their families. He cited the case of Vijay Kumar Mahto, whose body has not yet arrived despite repeated appeals. The MLA emphasized the urgent need for government attention to ensure timely repatriation of deceased workers and adequate compensation for families.

Call for a special committee
He urged the state government to form a special committee to oversee the process of returning the bodies of migrant workers promptly. Mahto also called for justice for victims of workplace violence and mental harassment, referencing incidents like the Prem Mahto case in Bokaro and harassment at BCCL projects.

Mahto concluded by requesting that the government take immediate measures to protect the rights of migrant workers and provide relief to bereaved families, stressing that the matter had reached a critical stage.
