Ranchi: During the winter session of the Jharkhand Assembly, MLA Jayram Mahto paid tribute to several prominent personalities who passed away recently, including actor Dharmendra, industrialist Gopichand Hinduja, and Pandit Channulal Mishra. He also raised the critical issue of migrant workers’ deaths and the delays in returning their bodies to families.
Tributes and Condolences
Speaking on the condolence motion, Mahto acknowledged the loss of various dignitaries, politicians, artists, and public servants. He mentioned the deaths of former MP Salauddin Ansari from Godda, industrialists Ramchandra Rungta and Gopichand Hinduja, and others. He also remembered the tragic death of CRPF personnel Milan Singh Rajput, who fell into a gorge in Udhampur, Kashmir, and cited multiple incidents across India including bus accidents and festival-related fatalities.
Concern for Migrant Workers
Mahto highlighted the plight of migrant workers, sharing that in just the past 15–20 days, 16 workers from his constituency alone have died, with their bodies delayed in reaching their villages. He emphasized the particularly tragic case of Vijay Kumar Mahto, a 25-year-old migrant worker whose body had not yet returned home, causing immense grief to his family.
Call for Government Action
MLA Mahto urged the Jharkhand government to form a special committee to ensure the timely transportation of deceased migrant workers’ bodies to their native villages. He also requested that the families of the deceased receive compensation. Highlighting the broader issue, he mentioned similar tragic incidents linked to industrial projects and law enforcement actions, stressing that justice and support must be provided to affected families.
Way Forward
Mahto’s appeal underscores the urgent need for systematic measures to address the safety, welfare, and posthumous care of migrant laborers, who face significant hardships while contributing to the workforce across the country.
