Jharkhand Announces Nagar Nikay Elections: Voting on 23 February, Results on 27 February

Ranchi, Jharkhand: The long-awaited municipal elections in Jharkhand have officially been announced. The State Election Commissioner, Alka Tiwari, informed the media in a press conference in Ranchi that elections for all municipal corporations, municipalities, and nagar panchayats across the state will be held simultaneously.

Voting and Model Code of Conduct
According to the Election Commission’s schedule, voting will take place on 23 February 2026, and the results will be declared on 27 February 2026. With the announcement, the Model Code of Conduct has come into immediate effect across the state.

Elections Based on 9 January Reservation List
The State Election Commission clarified that the elections will follow the reservation list issued on 9 January 2026. For this cycle, the mayoral post of Ranchi Municipal Corporation has been reserved for the Scheduled Tribes (ST) category, while the mayor posts in Dhanbad and Chas Municipal Corporations are reserved for the general category.

Focus on Women’s Representation
The Commission has also ensured that women’s reservation is fully implemented. In 20 nagar panchayats, the chairperson posts are reserved across SC, ST, OBC, and unreserved categories, giving priority to women candidates. For example, several nagar panchayats in Giridih, Garhwa, Dumka, Jamtara, Sahibganj, and East Singhbhum have chairperson posts reserved for women. In tribal-dominated areas like Khunti, Latehar, Godda, and Ranchi, preference has been given to Scheduled Tribes (ST) candidates.

The announcement sets the stage for statewide municipal elections, with emphasis on inclusive representation and transparency in the electoral process.
