Rail operations on the Asansol Division’s Lahaban–Simultala section remain severely affected even on the fifth day after a goods train derailment, though a partial restoration has brought some relief. After 67 hours of disruption, rail traffic on the down line was finally restored with the successful movement of a freight train, but passenger train services will have to wait longer for full normalization.
According to railway officials, the derailment near Simultala on the busy Howrah–Delhi main line had brought operations to a standstill on the Jasidih–Jhajha section. Due to track obstruction, several passenger and express trains scheduled for December 31 were either cancelled, diverted, short-terminated, or rescheduled, causing widespread inconvenience to travelers.
Freight Movement Restored on Down Line
In a major development, the Railways on Tuesday evening permitted the resumption of operations on the down line. An electric goods train with 58 wagons, bound for Dhanbad, departed Simultala at 7:32 pm and safely crossed the accident site at 7:53 pm, marking the first train movement after nearly three days.
Railway authorities described this as a significant milestone in track restoration efforts. Work is continuing at a rapid pace to make the up line operational as well, though officials said operations will resume only after ensuring complete safety.
Passenger Trains Still Affected
Despite the resumption of freight movement, passenger services remain largely disrupted. More than 50 trains have been affected so far. Official data indicates that 26 trains from the Asansol–Howrah division and 25 trains from the Danapur division were diverted. Additionally, 11 trains from the Howrah–Asansol section and one train from the Danapur division were cancelled.
As the main line has not yet been fully restored, passengers continue to face delays, cancellations, and route changes, leading to considerable hardship, especially during the year-end travel rush.
Railway officials have assured that restoration work is being carried out on a war footing and that normal passenger services will be resumed gradually once safety inspections are completed. Until then, passengers are advised to check train schedules and updates before commencing their journeys.
