Pulwama Doctor Turns Alleged Suicide Bomber: How Promising Dr. Umar Became a Delhi Blast Suspect

Pulwama, Kashmir: The peaceful village of Koil in Pulwama is in shock following the revelation that 29-year-old Dr. Umar Nabi is allegedly involved in the Delhi Red Fort blast as the suicide bomber who detonated a car near the historic monument. Residents are struggling to reconcile the image of the accomplished doctor with the deadly act.

A Stellar Academic Record

Despite living in one of Kashmir’s most sensitive districts, Dr. Umar’s academic record was impeccable. He excelled in competitive exams, completing his MBBS and MD from the prestigious Government Medical College, Srinagar. He worked at SMHS Hospital in Srinagar and GMC Anantnag before joining Al-Falah University in Faridabad as an assistant professor.

Family Shock and DNA Testing

Police visited Dr. Umar’s home on Monday evening, confiscating phones and taking two family members for questioning. His mother, along with other female relatives, was reportedly in the kitchen when authorities arrived. DNA samples were collected from the family to match with blast-site remnants.

A Promising Career, a Planned Marriage

Dr. Umar was widely regarded as a brilliant student and an ambitious professional. His father, a teacher, invested immense effort to ensure his son became a doctor and a good human being. The family had been planning his marriage with another doctor from Srinagar preparing for the UPSC exam. Relatives described him as the primary breadwinner and a source of inspiration for the community.

The Last Contact

According to family members, they last spoke to Dr. Umar on Friday, when he mentioned he would return home in three days. “We were all excited and looking forward to his return,” said his sister-in-law, Muzammila Akhtar.

Other Doctors in Custody

Police have taken three other Kashmir-born doctors into custody in connection with the case. Dr. Muzammil Ahmed Ganai, 32, from Koil village, was arrested in Faridabad. He had completed his MBBS from Batra Medical College, Jammu, MD from SKIMS, and DNB training at Al-Falah University. Another doctor, 30-year-old Adil Majid Rather from Kulgam, had been a senior resident at Anantnag Medical College before moving to Saharanpur, UP, where he was arrested. On Tuesday, police also detained Dr. Sajjad Malik from Pulwama for questioning, bringing the total number of Kashmir-born doctors in custody in connection with the case to four.

Village Life Continues Amid Shock

Despite the arrests, life in Koil village continued cautiously, with shops open and traffic moving normally. Security checkpoints along the Srinagar-Jammu highway remained active as part of protocols established after previous Pulwama attacks.

Authorities continue to investigate how a promising doctor from Pulwama allegedly became involved in such a deadly terrorist act, raising deep concerns about radicalization even among highly educated professionals.
