Jalore Panchayat Sparks Controversy with Smartphone Ban on Women; Senior IPS Rahul Prakash Comments

JALORE/JAIPUR: A recent directive issued by a village panchayat in Jalore district, Rajasthan, banning daughters-in-law and daughters from using smartphones with cameras, has sparked widespread debate. While the decision, set to take effect from January 26, has faced strong opposition, senior IPS officer Rahul Prakash has weighed in, offering nuanced support for limiting smartphone usage—but condemning gender-based restrictions.

The Panchayat Order and Its Rationale
The order, issued collectively by the panchayat members of 15 villages, restricts camera-enabled smartphones for women. Panchayat head Sujanaram Chaudhary defended the move, stating that when women in the household possess smartphones, children tend to spend excessive time on screens, potentially harming their eyesight. The directive aims, according to the panchayat, to protect children’s health, though the gender-specific nature of the restriction has drawn criticism.

Senior IPS Rahul Prakash Offers Perspective
Special Police Commissioner Rahul Prakash of Jaipur shared his viewpoint on social media, emphasizing the importance of limiting smartphone usage due to its potential negative effects. He clarified, however, that imposing restrictions based solely on gender—targeting only daughters and daughters-in-law—is entirely inappropriate and condemnable.

Prakash stated, “Smartphones, social media, and related technologies should be used within certain limits. These boundaries can be social, familial, or legal. The Jalore panchayat’s gender-based approach is unacceptable. While it is correct to limit smartphone usage to mitigate adverse effects, doing so discriminatorily against women is wrong.”

He further highlighted the role of society, media, and constitutional values in regulating social media usage, noting that unrestricted access often exposes users to inappropriate or uncontrolled content. According to him, ongoing dialogue and careful consideration are essential to establish fair and effective limits.

Conclusion
The debate around the Jalore panchayat’s smartphone ban reflects broader concerns about technology usage, societal norms, and gender equality. While restrictions for health and safety are supported by authorities, gender-biased policies are being strongly challenged at both local and state levels.
