Jaipur Turns 298: The Story Behind the Pink City and the World’s First ‘Well-Planned’ City

Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan and famously known as the Pink City, celebrates its 298th foundation day today. The city was established on 18 November 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, with its foundation stone laid near Gangapol Gate. Over the next nine years, Jaipur underwent rapid construction, ultimately becoming the new capital, shifting from Amer in 1736, and later gaining worldwide recognition for its unique architecture and planning.

Jaipur’s iconic pink color has a fascinating story. In 1876, during the visit of the Prince of Wales, King Edward VII, Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh ordered the entire city and its fort walls to be painted pink to welcome the royal guest. Since then, Jaipur has been famously known as the Pink City, a tradition that continues to this day.

Security and strategic planning were central to Jaipur’s design. Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II constructed a fortified wall approximately 60 feet high around the city, with seven gates—Gangapol, Chandpol, Surajpol, Kishanpol, Dhruvpol, Shivpol, and Rampol—ensuring protection from invaders.

Jaipur is also recognized as the world’s first ‘well-planned’ city. Its streets are meticulously laid out, with every lane connecting to main roads while preserving its unique identity and individual stories. This thoughtful urban planning and the city’s rich heritage continue to make Jaipur an architectural and cultural marvel, drawing visitors from across the globe.
