Jaipur: Vehicle owners in Jaipur, beware! From 26 February, the city’s traffic police will adopt a stricter approach to illegal parking. Instead of towing vehicles with cranes, traffic authorities will now immobilize them on the spot by applying wheel locks. Unlocking the wheel will incur an additional fee, while a separate fine for the parking violation will also apply, effectively doubling the financial penalty.
Fees for Unlocking Wheel Locks
Under the new system, two- and three-wheeler owners will have to pay ₹100 for the first offense and ₹200 for repeated violations. For four-wheelers, the fee will be ₹200 for the first instance and ₹400 for repeat offenders. These charges cover only the wheel-lock removal service; the regular no-parking fine will be levied separately.
Teams Deployed Across the City
Following directives from Police Commissioner Sachin Mittal, DCP Traffic Sumit Mehra has already started implementing the plan. Eighty specialized teams have been deployed in the busiest and most congested areas of Jaipur to ensure strict enforcement.
How the System Works
When a vehicle is found parked in a no-parking zone, the team will immediately lock its wheels. A sticker will then be placed on the vehicle’s windshield with the contact details of the officer in charge. The owner must call the number, pay the prescribed fee, and only then will the wheel lock be removed.
Why the Change Was Needed
Currently, Jaipur issues an average of 580–590 no-parking fines daily, with around 150 vehicles being lifted by cranes. The crane-based system often led to vehicle damage complaints and forced owners to visit police stations to retrieve their vehicles. The new wheel-lock system will allow immediate action on illegal parking, reduce traffic congestion caused by parked vehicles, and eliminate the hassle of vehicle towing and retrieval.
Awareness Campaign Before Enforcement
To ensure compliance, the traffic police have launched a seven-day awareness campaign across the city. Strict enforcement will begin from 26 February, giving citizens time to familiarize themselves with the new rules and adjust their parking habits.
