Jaipur: In a major cybercrime crackdown, Jaipur Police have uncovered two fake call centers operating in Malviya Nagar and Pratap Nagar, which were defrauding American customers of millions of dollars. The gang, consisting of young men and women, posed as Amazon and Apple customer care representatives, luring victims with promises of refunds or resolving delivery issues, and then extorted money. The total amount scammed is still being assessed.
How the Scam Operated
Police Commissioner Sachin Mittal explained that the suspects used fake mobile numbers, posted on search engines to appear as official customer care contacts for Amazon and Apple. Customers seeking help for delivery delays, refunds, order cancellations, blocked accounts, or failed payments would call these numbers, unaware they were contacting a fraudulent call center. The gang would then extract sensitive account details and create new accounts, using these to transfer dollars and carry out large-scale fraud.
Threats and Fake Government Notices
In some cases, the gang escalated the scam by impersonating government officials, issuing fake court notices, and threatening victims to extort further funds. During raids at “The Spark Inn” hotel in Malviya Nagar and a plot in front of Saraswati Apartment in Pratap Nagar, police arrested 60 individuals, including 11 women. Authorities seized 57 computers, 3 laptops, and fraudulent documents purportedly from US agencies such as the FBI and IT Department.
List of Key Arrests
The arrested individuals hail from various Indian states including Maharashtra, Gujarat, West Bengal, Assam, Nagaland, and Meghalaya. They include both men and women aged between 18 and 33, operating across multiple fake call centers. (A detailed list of all 60 arrested is available with police records.)
Police Action Ongoing
The Jaipur Police Cyber Cell is continuing its investigation to identify all victims and the full scale of the fraud. Officials have urged the public to verify customer care numbers directly through official company channels and remain vigilant against phishing and scam calls.
This operation marks a significant step in cracking cross-border cyber fraud networks operating from Indian cities targeting overseas victims.
