In a major boost to urban transport, the Jaipur Metro is set to introduce a QR code–based ticketing system, bringing the city’s metro services in line with those of Delhi and Mumbai. The new facility will allow passengers to book metro tickets from home using their mobile phones, eliminating the need to stand in long queues at stations.
With the implementation of this digital system, Jaipur Metro commuters will no longer have to rely solely on physical tokens for entry. Instead, passengers can scan a QR code, make the payment online, and receive a digital QR ticket on their mobile devices, which can be scanned at the metro station gates to access the train.
Ticket Booking from Home
Under the new arrangement, passengers can book up to six tickets per day using a mobile number issued by the metro administration. After completing the payment, a QR code will be sent directly to the passenger’s phone. This digital ticket can be safely stored and used at the station for entry and travel.
Unlike the earlier token-based system—where tokens had to be returned at the exit gates—the QR code ticket remains with the passenger, offering greater convenience and flexibility.
Why the New System Was Introduced
According to Jaipur Metro officials, the decision to switch to QR code–based ticketing was driven by significant losses under the token system. Over time, a large number of tokens were either damaged or stolen. Metro authorities revealed that nearly 80,000 tokens have gone missing or become unusable, leading to substantial financial losses due to repeated replacement costs.
The new digital ticketing system is expected to reduce operational losses, improve efficiency, and provide a smoother travel experience for passengers.
A Step Toward Smarter Mobility
With this upgrade, Jaipur Metro joins the league of modern metro systems that emphasize cashless, contactless, and commuter-friendly travel. The initiative is expected to save time, cut costs, and encourage more people to opt for public transport.
Metro officials believe the move will not only enhance passenger convenience but also mark an important step toward smart urban mobility in Rajasthan’s capital.
