Deoria (Uttar Pradesh), Jan 31: Former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Amitabh Thakur, who is currently serving time at Deoria district jail on fraud charges, was admitted to Deoria Medical College on Saturday after his health reportedly deteriorated.
According to officials, Thakur was brought to the medical facility in an ambulance following complaints of stomach pain and anxiety, on the advice of the jail’s medical officer. He is now under close supervision and receiving treatment from a team of doctors.
A spokesperson from the medical college, Dr Ajay, confirmed that Thakur is being monitored and said, “He was admitted after showing symptoms of abdominal discomfort and severe anxiety. Medical teams are providing necessary treatment, and his condition is being carefully observed.”
Sources indicate that Thakur’s hospitalization comes amid rising concerns about his health in jail, with reports suggesting stress and anxiety-related symptoms in addition to physical ailments. Officials have emphasized that he is receiving full medical care and that appropriate steps are being taken to ensure his wellbeing.
The former officer, known for his outspoken stance on administrative and policing issues, has been in judicial custody since his conviction on fraud-related charges, pending ongoing legal proceedings. His current hospitalization has drawn attention from civil rights activists and supporters, who have urged authorities to ensure adequate medical attention and monitoring during his incarceration.
Medical personnel have confirmed that Thakur’s condition is stable, though he will remain under observation for the next few days to manage both his physical and mental health concerns effectively.
The district jail administration has stated that the transfer to the medical college was conducted following standard protocols for prisoner healthcare, and that there is no threat to public safety.
