Vadodara, Gujarat: IPS officer Sushil Agrawal, a 2017 batch officer of the Gujarat cadre, is making headlines in the state for his exemplary policing and investigative skills. Currently serving as the Superintendent of Police (SP) for Vadodara Rural, Agrawal has earned recognition for handling high-profile cases, including the remarkable recovery of 240 stolen gold coins in Navsari—a case that has become a reference point for crime investigation in the state.
A graduate of IIT Delhi with a B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering, Agrawal later cleared the UPSC examination to join the Indian Police Service. Known for his round-the-clock diligence, he previously served as SP of Navsari before being transferred to Vadodara. In Vadodara, he has successfully overseen security arrangements for major events, including the return of a 16-year-old India-New Zealand ODI and the Women’s Premier League (WPL) matches at Khanderao Stadium.
Solving a 240 Gold Coin Theft Case
In 2023, while serving as Navsari SP, Agrawal led the investigation of a unique theft case involving 240 gold coins dating back to the British era. A woman residing abroad had entrusted home renovation work to a contractor, who in turn hired laborers from Madhya Pradesh. During construction, gold coins hidden in the walls were discovered. The case took a complex turn when some laborers took the coins to their homes in Madhya Pradesh, falsely accusing local police of theft.
Under Agrawal’s guidance, the Navsari Crime Branch conducted multiple investigations, including field visits and police camps in Madhya Pradesh. His meticulous efforts not only recovered the gold coins but also led to the imprisonment of several police personnel involved in the mishandling of the case.
For his exceptional work in crime investigations, Agrawal has been awarded the Ministry of Home Affairs Medal.
Track Record in Vadodara
Since taking over as SP of Vadodara Rural in August last year, Agrawal has resolved several major cases, including a Jain temple robbery, a father’s murder orchestrated by his daughter and her boyfriend in Padra, and action against liquor mafia kingpin Lala Jaiswal under the Gujarat Control of Terrorism and Organized Crime Act (GJCTOC), resulting in seizure of assets worth ₹102 crore.
Personal Background
Born on 20 August 1990, Agrawal hails originally from Rajasthan, though his family has been settled in Surat for several decades. Fluent in Hindi, English, and Gujarati, he is known for his active lifestyle, including participating in multiple marathons. His wife, Shivani Goyal, is a 2018 batch IAS officer of the Gujarat cadre.
At just 35, Sushil Agrawal has established a reputation as one of Gujarat’s most proactive and capable police officers, balancing administrative responsibility with hands-on investigation.
