Patna, Feb 23, 2026: Bihar-cadre IPS officer M. Sunil Nayak, currently serving as Inspector General of the Fire Department, received temporary relief as the Andhra Pradesh Police’s attempt to arrest him in Patna was stayed by the High Court. The move came in connection with a 2021 case involving alleged assault and attempt to murder former MP K. Raghuram Krishna Raju.
High Court Intervention
Early on Thursday, a special team from Andhra Pradesh Police arrived at Nayak’s residence in Patna around 6 a.m., intending to take him into custody under IPC Section 307 (Attempt to Murder). The team was preparing for his transit remand when the High Court, hearing Nayak’s plea, issued a stay on his arrest, preventing any immediate action. This brought a temporary reprieve for Nayak, while his residence witnessed heightened tension and activity since morning.
Who is IPS Sunil Nayak?
M. Sunil Nayak is a 2005-batch IPS officer of the Bihar cadre. Originally from Andhra Pradesh, he is known for his strict and disciplined approach. During his deputation in 2021 to the Andhra Pradesh CID, he was allegedly involved in the custodial assault of former MP K. Raghuram Krishna Raju, which led to the filing of the attempt-to-murder case.
Currently, Nayak serves as IG in Bihar’s Fire Department, but the ongoing legal proceedings have brought him into the spotlight.
Background of the Controversy
The controversy traces back to May 2021, when K. Raghuram Krishna Raju, then a YSR Congress MP from Narsapuram, was arrested during the COVID-19 pandemic. Raju claimed that the case was fabricated by the Jagan Mohan Reddy government and that he was forcibly taken into custody despite having undergone open-heart surgery weeks earlier. He alleged that he was physically mistreated and threatened due to his criticism of the then-Chief Minister.
After becoming a TDP legislator, Raju in 2023 filed an FIR against Jagan Mohan Reddy and five others, including IPS Sunil Nayak, senior IPS officer Sitaram Manjineyulu, retired police officer R. Vijay Paul, and former Guntur government hospital superintendent G. Prabhavat, accusing them of attempt to murder under Section 307 of the IPC. At the time of the incident, IPS Nayak was on deputation to Andhra Pradesh CID from the Bihar cadre.
Legal Proceedings Ongoing
The High Court’s stay has temporarily halted the arrest proceedings, putting the planned transit remand on hold. The case continues to draw attention due to the involvement of high-ranking officials and the serious nature of the charges.
