
Jalaun, Uttar Pradesh: A shocking incident unfolded late Friday night at the Kuthond police station in Jalaun district, where Inspector Arun Kumar Rai allegedly shot himself with his service revolver. He was rushed to the Medical College in Orai, but despite intensive treatment, doctors declared him dead. The incident has triggered panic and deep concern within the police department.
According to initial information, Inspector Rai, who was posted at the Kuthond police station, had returned from patrolling after attending a community feast (bhandara), where he was also felicitated by local residents. At around 9:00 pm, he reached his government quarters. Just 30 minutes later, a gunshot was heard from his room.
Police personnel rushed to the spot and found the inspector lying in a pool of blood, with his service revolver beside him. He was immediately taken to the Medical College, where doctors battled for more than two hours to save him. He was pronounced dead at 11:15 pm.
Superintendent of Police Dr. Durgesh Kumar reached the spot soon after receiving the information. He confirmed the incident, stating,
“Inspector Arun Kumar Rai shot himself in the head with his service revolver at around 9:30 pm. He succumbed to his injuries during treatment. The exact reason behind this extreme step is still unknown. A detailed investigation is underway.”
Inspector Rai hailed from Sant Kabir Nagar district and was promoted to the rank of Inspector in 2023. His family has been informed about the tragic development.
The police are now examining all possible angles, including stress, personal issues, and professional pressures, to ascertain the cause of the apparent suicide. The incident has sent shockwaves through the department, raising concerns about mental health and stress levels among police personnel.
