Fatehpur, UP: A shocking incident has come to light from Fatehpur district, where a Dalit girl was brutally assaulted after asking a group of local girls to stop grazing their goats in her field. The victim, identified as Deepika, alleged that the police initially refused to register her complaint, instructing her to first contact the “Captain” before they would file an FIR.
Assault Over Grazing Dispute
Deepika, daughter of a poor farmer from Nibawar Darouta Lalpur village in the JafarGanj police station area, recounted that about a month ago, two local girls, Rimjhim and Khushi Dubey, were grazing their goats in her standing crop. When Deepika asked them to remove the goats, the girls reportedly hurled caste-based abuses and threatened her. When she tried to drive the goats away, the girls attacked her with sticks, breaking her hand in the assault.
Police Initially Refused to Act
The victim claimed that when she approached the police to file a complaint, the station staff pressured her to settle the matter amicably. Upon her refusal, the inspector allegedly told her, “You need to get orders from Captain Sahib before we can file the FIR.” Frustrated, Deepika approached the Superintendent of Police on December 10, submitting a written complaint and urging action against the accused.
Ongoing Threats
Deepika also stated that the father-daughter duo involved in the attack frequently hurl casteist abuses and threaten her, saying, “If we can break the hands and legs of women from the Yadav community, what can you do?”
Following her complaint to the SP, the police have now registered a case against three people, including the father and daughters, under the SC/ST Act along with other relevant sections. The investigation into the matter is ongoing, said DSP JafarGanj Brijmohan Rai.
