Satna Central Jail has introduced a unique initiative, ‘Jailvani’, to keep inmates mentally relaxed and engaged. Under this program, selected prisoners take on the role of radio jockeys (RJs), broadcasting motivational talks, devotional songs, and educational content throughout the jail premises.
Inmates as Radio Jockeys
Breaking the usual monotony associated with prison life, the morning in Satna Central Jail now begins not with alarms, but with soothing bhajans and insightful discussions. Three inmates, chosen for their knowledge of spirituality and music, manage the Jailvani broadcasts. One inmate hosts the show from 7:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., followed by a second session at 12:30 p.m. These broadcasts reach every barrack, keeping the entire prison population connected and informed.
Speakers Installed in Every Barrack
Through speakers installed in every barrack, inmates listen to bhajans, motivational songs, and educational stories. Apart from providing entertainment, the initiative promotes mental peace and helps inmates cope with stress. Additionally, any live event organized inside the jail is broadcasted through this system, ensuring that all prisoners are aware and involved.
A Tool for Administration
Jailvani also serves as an effective communication tool for prison authorities. Instructions, announcements, or event notifications can be conveyed to all inmates simultaneously. This keeps prisoners engaged in constructive activities, encouraging reflection and a sense of responsibility, ultimately aiding their reintegration into society.
Positive Impact on Inmate Behavior
According to Deputy Superintendent Sonveer Singh Kushwaha, the primary goal of Jailvani is to promote mental well-being and personal improvement among inmates. “Through educational content, devotional music, and creative programs, we aim to reduce stress and inspire positive change. Since its launch in 2016, Jailvani has noticeably improved daily routines and behavior inside Satna Central Jail,” he added.
