A major case of cyber fraud has surfaced in Muzaffarpur district, where two businessmen were allegedly duped of nearly Rs 85 lakh under the pretext of investing in digital gold. The fraud was reportedly carried out by a young woman from Indore, who lured the victims through social media with promises of high returns.
According to police officials, the incident took place in the Bhagwanpur Maheshwar Market area under the Sadar police station limits. The victims have been identified as Nilay Bharti, a local businessman, and his acquaintance Shyam Babu Singh, a resident of Patahi.
Police said the accused, identified as Samanta Kashyap, came in contact with the businessmen through social media platforms. Gradually gaining their trust, she claimed to be associated with gold and silver investment schemes and assured them of “exceptional profits” and “financial growth like a rain of gold.”
Influenced by her claims, the victims transferred large sums of money for investment in so-called digital gold platforms. Records show that Rs 82.59 lakh was taken from Nilay Bharti, while over Rs 2 lakh was extracted from Shyam Babu Singh.
The investments were allegedly made through platforms named Kanakdham Exchange and later Sabren Gold Exchange. However, soon after receiving the money, the accused reportedly stopped responding to calls and messages. When no investment details or returns were provided, the businessmen realized they had been cheated.
Following the discovery of the fraud, the victims lodged a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Helpline number 1930, after which an FIR was registered at the Muzaffarpur Cyber Police Station.
Police officials stated that an investigation is currently underway. Bank transactions, digital platforms, and online communication records are being thoroughly examined to trace the money trail and identify other possible links in the fraud network.
Authorities have once again urged citizens to remain cautious while making online investments, especially those promised through social media platforms with guaranteed or unusually high returns.
