Indore Water Tragedy: Six Confirmed Deaths, Compensation Distributed to 18 Families; Collector Shivam Verma Emphasizes Sensitivity

Indore: The Madhya Pradesh government has disbursed compensation to families affected by the recent water contamination tragedy in Indore’s Bhagirathpura area, which led to several deaths due to diarrheal illness. A total of 18 families received compensation checks of ₹2 lakh each on Tuesday.

Indore Collector Shivam Verma stated that while only six deaths could be directly linked to the contaminated water, the government decided to provide compensation to all affected families in light of the severity of the situation.

Earlier, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav had announced the compensation of ₹2 lakh for the victims’ families. However, the Congress party raised questions about the adequacy of the amount. On Tuesday, a Congress delegation led by state president Jeetu Patwari and Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar visited the affected families, intensifying political activity in the area and prompting the deployment of heavy police forces.

Area Turned into a Security Zone
The Bhagirathpura locality was effectively converted into a cantonment for security reasons. All entry points were barricaded, and riot control vans were stationed to maintain law and order following recent clashes between BJP and Congress workers.

Tensions Between Congress Leaders and Police
When the Congress delegation arrived around 1:00 PM, security personnel initially barred their entry, leading to a heated exchange between Umang Singhar and police officials. Despite the standoff, Congress leaders managed to enter the area through an alternate route and met three grieving families of the deceased.

After the visit, Jeetu Patwari criticized the state government in a press statement, alleging that while the administration spends millions on routine meetings, it had insulted the victims by providing only ₹2 lakh in compensation.
