Indore Health Crisis: 99 Hospitalized, 16 in ICU as Authorities Turn Every Home into ‘Mini Hospital’

Indore: In the wake of a public health crisis in Bhagirathpura, Indore, caused by contaminated water, the district health department has launched a comprehensive digital response. For the first time, advanced digital tools like the Kobo Tool were deployed, enabling 61 teams to conduct a real-time survey of 5,013 households in the affected area.

Ongoing Hospitalizations
Despite the survey and relief measures, the outbreak continues to impact residents. Currently, 99 patients remain hospitalized, with 16 in intensive care. Six new cases showing symptoms of diarrhea were admitted recently. The initiative marks a significant step in proactive disease management and early intervention.

Digital Door-to-Door Survey
Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) Dr. Madhav Hasani explained that, under the guidance of Dr. Chandrashekhar Gedam (Regional Director, RoHFW-GOI) and District Collector Shivam Verma, the Kobo Tool platform allowed health teams to collect and upload data in real time, creating a live heat map of the affected area. Over the past 48 hours, nursing staff, CHOs, ASHA, and ANM teams covered all 5,013 households, reaching 24,786 residents.

Turning Homes into Care Points
To prevent dehydration and manage symptoms at home, the administration converted each household into a mini care center. Families were provided with 10 ORS packets and 30 zinc tablets, and advised to treat 10 liters of water with 10 CleanWat drops, waiting an hour before consumption. Over 24,000 residents received health kits, along with counseling on handwashing and medication dosages.

Hospital Updates
Patients are being treated at MY Hospital, Arbind Hospital, and Chacha Nehru Children’s Hospital, where 99 remain admitted, including 16 in the ICU.

Political Leaders Visit Amid Tensions
On Tuesday, the crisis attracted political attention as Congress state president Jitu Patwari and Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar visited affected families. The visit led to heightened security, with police deploying barricades and riot control vehicles at all entry points. Tensions flared between Congress and BJP workers, reflecting the heightened anxiety in the area, where several residents have reportedly lost their lives and many others remain hospitalized.
