Indore, Jan 31: A traffic policeman in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore, popularly known as the city’s “dancing cop” for his moonwalking stunts on the streets, has been demoted from the rank of head constable to constable following allegations of “indiscipline” on social media, officials said on Saturday.
The officer, Ranjit Singh, had previously been removed from field duty last year in a separate controversy, after he was accused of sending an indecent message to a woman on social media. A departmental inquiry into that matter is reportedly still underway.
Singh was originally promoted to the position of officiating head constable in 2021 on the orders of the Madhya Pradesh Police Headquarters, according to Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Rajesh Dandotiya. However, his recent online conduct prompted the department to revoke his promotion and restore him to the rank of constable.
The incident highlights the growing scrutiny of police personnel on social media, with authorities emphasizing that online behavior can have a direct impact on professional responsibilities and disciplinary actions. The Indore Traffic Police have stated that they are committed to maintaining professional conduct and public trust, both on the field and online.
Singh had gained popularity for his viral videos featuring energetic dance moves while performing traffic duties, earning him the nickname “dancing cop” among local residents. Despite his public appeal, the department has stressed that discipline and ethical conduct remain paramount for all officers.
