Patna: The much-anticipated Indo-Nepal Border Road Project, set to boost development and enhance security in Bihar’s border areas, is now nearing completion. The project will connect seven key districts along the India-Nepal border, strengthening both infrastructure and strategic access.
According to officials, over 95% of the construction work has already been completed. The road stretches from Madanpur in West Champaran to Galgalia in Kishanganj, covering a total planned length of approximately 554 kilometers. To date, more than 529 kilometers of the road has been built. The central government-backed project is being executed at an estimated cost of ₹5,865 crore, with completion expected by May 2026.
Addressing Land Acquisition and Other Challenges
Pankaj Kumar Pal, Secretary of the Public Works Department (PWD), recently reviewed the project’s progress and instructed authorities to resolve any remaining obstacles, including land acquisition issues in East Champaran. Field officers have been directed to ensure that all pending work is completed promptly.
Direct Access to Border Security Posts
A primary objective of the project is to enhance border security. The road will provide direct access to various Border Security Force (BSF) outposts, facilitating rapid movement of personnel. This will not only aid security operations and curb illegal activities but also integrate local communities into broader development initiatives.
Infrastructure Highlights
The challenging terrain, crisscrossed by rivers, required substantial engineering efforts. So far, the project has completed the construction of 808 culverts and 129 small and large bridges, with work on the remaining structures ongoing. Once completed, the road will connect West Champaran, East Champaran, Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Supaul, Araria, and Kishanganj, forming a major regional corridor.
Economic and Social Impact
The road is expected to benefit millions of residents in Bihar’s border districts. It will improve connectivity for agricultural produce to markets, provide better access to health and educational facilities, and reduce migration by creating opportunities locally. Overall, the project promises to be a safe and efficient transport link that will open up trade and development opportunities in North Bihar.
