Indigenous Army Dogs Steal the Show at Jaipur Parade Rehearsal

Jaipur, Rajasthan: As Jaipur gears up for the Army Day parade, indigenous army dogs have become the stars of the rehearsal, captivating the crowd with their precision, discipline, and remarkable agility. On the city streets, spectators gathered in large numbers to watch these specially trained canines in action ahead of the main parade on January 15.

Dogs of native breeds such as Mudhol Hound, Rampur Hound, Chippiparai, Kombai, and Rajapalayam participated in the rehearsal. Sporting black sunglasses and marching in perfect synchrony, the dogs impressed onlookers with their impeccable discipline and sharp movements.

Specialized Training Makes Them Elite

These army dogs are trained extensively to enhance their natural instincts. Post-training, they become highly skilled in detecting explosives and narcotics, locating hidden threats, and responding swiftly to their handlers’ commands. In past military operations, these dogs have displayed extraordinary courage and have been recognized for their bravery, similar to how soldiers receive medals for gallantry.

Indigenous Breeds Rival German Shepherds

While German Shepherds are globally renowned for their strength and agility, India’s indigenous breeds are increasingly proving their mettle. Rampur and Mudhol Hounds, in particular, have emerged as formidable alternatives, embodying speed, agility, and loyalty, making them a symbol of pride for the Indian Army.

Breed Highlights

  • Rampur Hound: Originating from Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, this breed is a mix of Afghan and English Hounds. Known for its speed, stamina, and acute sense of smell and hearing, it excels in hunting and military tasks.
  • Mudhol Hound: Hailing from the Deccan plateau in Karnataka, this breed has a historical legacy, having been used by the Maratha army. Today, it plays a key role in modern security operations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has previously lauded India’s indigenous breeds during his Mann Ki Baat address. These dogs will also feature prominently in the upcoming Republic Day military parade, showcasing India’s homegrown canine talent.
