India’s First Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Between Guwahati and Kolkata: Route, Fare, Stations, and All Details

India is set to witness a landmark moment in railway travel with the launch of the first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train connecting Guwahati and Kolkata. Scheduled to be flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi later this month, the train promises a revolutionary combination of speed, comfort, and modern safety features for overnight travel between Northeast India and Eastern India.

Key Features and Safety

The Vande Bharat Sleeper Train comes equipped with a Kavach safety system, automatic doors, advanced fire safety mechanisms, and CCTV surveillance in all coaches to ensure passenger security throughout the journey. For hygiene, disinfectant sprayers will be used for routine cleaning, enhancing safety and comfort during overnight travel.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw inspected the train at New Delhi Railway Station, describing it as a significant step in modernising long-distance rail travel under the Make in India initiative. The train also marks a new era for Indian Railways, combining domestic manufacturing with world-class technology.

Launch Date and Train Composition

The highly anticipated Vande Bharat Sleeper services are expected to begin operations around January 18–19, 2026. The 16-coach train can accommodate 823 passengers, with a design speed of 180 km/h, although it will initially operate at 120–130 km/h.

The coach composition includes:

  • 11 Third AC coaches (611 seats)
  • 4 Second AC coaches (188 seats)
  • 1 First AC coach (24 seats)

The train also features ergonomically designed berths with enhanced cushioning, vestibule-connected automatic gates for smooth movement, superior suspension for reduced noise, an automatic train protection system (Kavach), emergency talk-back systems, and advanced sanitation measures.

Route and Stations

The Vande Bharat Sleeper will connect major cities in Assam and West Bengal, running from Guwahati to Howrah. The train is designed to cover important districts in both states, providing a faster and more comfortable alternative to conventional trains, especially as both states head into election season this year.

Fare and Travel Experience

The fares for Vande Bharat Sleeper are considerably lower than air travel:

  • Third AC (with meals): ₹2,300
  • Second AC (with meals): ₹3,000
  • First AC (with meals): ₹3,600

For comparison, a one-way air ticket between Guwahati and Kolkata costs around ₹6,000–8,000, making the train an affordable yet premium option.

Regional Cuisine on Board

Passengers will enjoy region-specific meals during the journey. Services starting from Guwahati will feature authentic Assamese cuisine, while trains originating from Kolkata will serve traditional Bengali dishes, adding a unique regional touch to the travel experience.

The Vande Bharat Sleeper is expected to revolutionize overnight rail travel in India by combining high speed, modern amenities, and regional cultural experiences, offering passengers a safe, comfortable, and luxurious journey across Eastern India.
