India’s First Musical Road to Begin in Mumbai: Coastal Road to Offer Japan-Dubai Style Driving Experience

Mumbai: In a unique blend of modern engineering and cultural expression, Mumbai is all set to introduce India’s first-ever Musical Road on its newly developed Coastal Road stretch. This innovative road feature, similar to those found in Japan and Dubai, promises motorists a completely new driving experience—where the road itself produces music.

The musical road will be inaugurated on Wednesday by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The special installation has been developed on the route from Nariman Point to Worli, specifically on the northbound lane.

How the Musical Road Works

As per civic officials, specially designed musical strips have been installed on the road surface at precise intervals. When a vehicle passes over these grooves at a specific speed, the friction between the tyres and the strips creates sound waves, producing a tune that can be clearly heard inside the car.

Drivers travelling from Nariman Point towards Worli will hear the famous track ‘Jai Ho’ from the Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire, once they cross the tunnel and drive around 500 metres ahead, maintaining an ideal speed of 60 to 80 kmph.

India Becomes the Fifth Country With a Musical Road

With this development, India becomes the fifth country in the world to implement such a musical road concept. Earlier, similar roads have been successfully introduced in countries like Japan, Hungary, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates.

The concept of musical roads was first discovered in Japan in 2007, when engineer Shizuo Shinoda noticed the sound patterns produced by a bulldozer while working on a road surface. Over time, this idea evolved into what is now popularly known as a Melody Road.

Project Cost and Execution

The project has been developed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) at a cost of Rs 6.21 crore (including GST). A Hungarian company was appointed to carry out the installation work on the coastal road.

The musical strips have been placed on the first lane adjacent to the divider, ensuring that vehicles passing over them at the recommended speed will hear the tune clearly, even inside closed vehicles.

Signboards Installed for Awareness

To ensure safety and proper execution, BMC has also installed signboards at distances of 500 metres, 100 metres and 60 metres ahead of the musical strip section, alerting motorists in advance.

A New Landmark for Mumbai

Officials stated that the initiative reflects a perfect combination of advanced technology and artistic innovation, making the coastal road not only a fast and traffic-free route but also a memorable experience for commuters.

With the launch of this musical road, Mumbai once again sets an example of modern urban development, offering citizens a unique attraction that is expected to become a major talking point in the city.
