A major breakthrough has been made in the case of an Indian woman who went missing in the United States just before the New Year, with investigations revealing that she was murdered by her former boyfriend, who later fled to India. Acting on an Interpol alert, Indian authorities have arrested the accused from Tamil Nadu.
The victim, Nikitha Rao Godishala (27), was working as a Data and Strategy Analyst in Ellicott City, Maryland. She was reported missing on January 2, triggering an extensive search by US law enforcement agencies.
Body Found in Ex-Boyfriend’s Apartment
According to the Howard County Police, Nikitha’s body was discovered on January 3 during a search of her ex-boyfriend Arjun Sharma’s apartment, following a search warrant. She was found with multiple stab wounds, confirming that it was a case of homicide.
Ironically, it was Arjun Sharma himself who initially contacted the police, claiming that he had last seen Nikitha on New Year’s Eve. However, investigators soon grew suspicious of his statements.
Accused Fled to India After the Crime
Police investigations revealed that Arjun Sharma fled to India on the same day Nikitha was reported missing. Authorities believe that the murder took place sometime after 7 pm on December 31. With the help of international coordination and an Interpol notice, Sharma was tracked down and arrested in Tamil Nadu.
US officials have confirmed that the process to extradite Sharma back to the United States is underway, where he will face trial.
Rising Career Cut Short
Nikitha Godishala had been working with Veda Health since February 2025 and was regarded as a promising professional. According to family sources, she had recently received the company’s prestigious “All-In Award”, highlighting her achievements and dedication.
Embassy Assures Full Support
The Indian Embassy in the United States stated that it is in constant touch with Nikitha’s family and is providing all possible consular assistance. The embassy also confirmed that it is closely coordinating with local US authorities to ensure justice in the case.
Investigation Ongoing
While the accused has been arrested, US police officials have stated that the exact motive behind the murder is still under investigation. The case has sent shockwaves through the Indian diaspora in the US and raised serious concerns about the safety of Indian professionals abroad.
Authorities on both sides have assured that the case will be pursued rigorously and that the accused will be brought to justice through due legal process.
