Imran Masood and Akhilesh Yadav React to AR Rahman’s Claims of Religious Bias in Film Industry

Saharanpur, January 17, 2026: Renowned musician AR Rahman has stirred controversy by claiming that he has not been getting as much work in the film industry due to his religion. The statements have drawn responses from senior political figures, including former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, and Congress MP Imran Masood.

Akilesh Yadav’s Statement:
While speaking to the media, Akhilesh Yadav said he had not personally heard Rahman’s latest interview but emphasized his admiration for the Oscar-winning musician. “I have been a huge fan of AR Rahman’s music. Even before his songs were officially released, they used to top the charts. He is an internationally recognized artist, and no one should face discrimination in art, music, or culture,” Yadav remarked.

Imran Masood’s Statement:
Congress MP Imran Masood criticized the central government, stating that if a globally acclaimed artist is facing reduced opportunities in his own country due to religious or communal reasons, it is a matter of serious concern. Masood also highlighted the growing instances of violence against Hindus in Bangladesh, adding, “While hatred is rising within the country, attacks on Hindus abroad are also increasing.”

Background of the Controversy:
In a recent interview, AR Rahman revealed that over the past eight years, he has received fewer offers in the Hindi film industry compared to earlier periods. He attributed this to changes in power structures and a lack of creative understanding, hinting that communal factors might also play a role, though he did not state this explicitly.

Rahman further reflected on his early career, saying that despite the success of films like Roja, Bombay, and Dil Se, he sometimes felt like an outsider due to being a Tamil musician. His widespread recognition came later with Subhash Ghai’s Taal. He clarified that his comments were about the period from the 1990s to the present, distinguishing it from his early success.

The comments have sparked heated debate, with BJP leaders strongly opposing Rahman’s claims.
