IIT Kanpur Shock: BTech Student Takes Own Life After Missing Placement Opportunity Due to Back Paper

Kanpur: The IIT Kanpur campus was shaken after BTech final-year student Jaysingh, originally from Rajasthan, reportedly took his own life, citing despair over unresolved back papers and missed placement opportunities. According to sources, Jaysingh first attempted to cut his wrist four times before ultimately hanging himself, raising serious concerns about the institute’s counseling and student support mechanisms.

Course Completion and Academic Struggles
Jaysingh had enrolled in 2020 in the Biological Sciences and Bioengineering department, a four-year course scheduled to be completed in 2024. Reports indicate that he struggled with certain subjects, leading to concerns over possible year-back scenarios. The institute administration has not yet provided an official confirmation regarding his academic standing.

Missed Placement Opportunities
Sources revealed that due to his back paper, Jaysingh missed two placement drives and had not yet cleared the required subject. The repeated academic setbacks reportedly left him distressed, culminating in this tragic incident.

Investigation Underway
ADCP West, Kapil Dev Singh, stated that the reasons behind the incident will become clearer after discussions with the student’s family. Authorities are also gathering information from his roommate, who was on leave, to determine if any warning signs were present.

A Growing Concern
This marks the fourth death at IIT Kanpur in 2025, including two students and one software developer. The spate of suicides has raised critical questions about whether the institution’s counseling services are adequately reaching students in need.

The incident highlights the urgent need for strengthened mental health support and academic guidance to prevent further tragedies in elite educational institutions.
