IIT Jodhpur Professor Sentenced to 10 Years in Jail by Noida Court for Rape of Former Student

Noida: A court in Gautam Buddh Nagar has sentenced IIT Jodhpur professor Vivek Vijayvargiya to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹20,000 after finding him guilty of raping his former student. The case dates back to 2009, while the FIR was registered in 2019.

According to case records, Vijayvargiya, a faculty member in the Mathematics Department at IIT Jodhpur, had known the woman from earlier years when she was his student. The two reportedly reconnected in 2011, and the woman later secured a job at the same institution.

In 2019, the woman filed a complaint at Noida Sector-20 Police Station, alleging that the professor had called her to the GAIL Guest House in Noida’s Film City under the pretext of discussing a job opportunity. There, she claimed, he sexually assaulted her. The FIR was lodged the next day, and after a detailed investigation, the police filed a chargesheet on 25 September 2019.

During the trial, the court noted that police reached the scene immediately after the complaint and clarified that the delay in FIR registration occurred at the police station, not due to hesitation by the survivor. Testimonies by prosecution witnesses were found consistent and credible. The court held that the accused had lured the woman with a false promise of employment and committed rape at the guest house.

On 27 November 2019, Additional Sessions Judge Priyanka Kumar declared Vijayvargiya guilty, culminating in Thursday’s sentencing order.
