IIT Delhi Alumni Raise ₹477 Crore Endowment Fund for the Institute

New Delhi: IIT Delhi has successfully raised a ₹477 crore endowment fund with the support of its alumni, of which ₹338 crore has already been collected. This marks a historic milestone, as IIT Delhi is the first IIT in the country to publish an Alumni Support Report.

Foundation Day Launch and Alumni Impact Report

On the occasion of Foundation Day, IIT Delhi released its Alumni Impact Report, highlighting the contributions of its former students. Professor Rangan Banerjee, Director of IIT Delhi, said the institute currently has 1,966 alumni, starting from just 150 students at inception, growing into a global academic hub. About 60% of the institute’s funding still comes from the government, while the remaining 40% is raised through the institute and its alumni network.

Global Influence of IIT Delhi Alumni

Professor Banerjee emphasized that many IIT Delhi alumni go on to make a global impact, inspiring future generations. Dr. Gurtej S. Sandhu, a former student and Corporate Vice President and Chief Fellow at Micron Technology, said that alumni are often looked upon as role models for the next generation of students, reinforcing the importance of giving back to the institute.

Planning for the Next Decade

IIT Delhi is also preparing its vision for the next 10 years, to be launched in May this year. Professor Banerjee explained that the focus will be on infrastructure, faculty, courses, and research. The institute will gather input from faculty and students between March and April to shape the plan.

He added that the estimated requirement for infrastructure development is ₹8,000–9,000 crore, though it is still in the planning stage. The funding strategy is designed as a three-way model: one-third of the funds generated internally by the institute, one-third from alumni contributions, and one-third from government support.

This initiative highlights the growing role of alumni in shaping the future of higher education in India, positioning IIT Delhi as a global leader in research, innovation, and academic excellence.
