IGI Airport Becomes India’s First ‘Water-Positive’ Airport

Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport has become the first airport in India to achieve the prestigious ‘Water-Positive’ status, serving over 40 million passengers annually. Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) announced that the airport now returns more water to nature than it consumes, marking a significant milestone in sustainable infrastructure.

Recognition by NITI Aayog
The accolade was formally presented at the Water Innovation Summit, where DIAL was honoured under the NITI Aayog–CII Water Neutrality Framework. This recognition positions IGI Airport as a global leader in sustainable and water-conscious airport infrastructure.

Commitment to Environmental Sustainability
DIAL CEO, Videsh Kumar Jaipuriar, said, “Achieving Water-Positive status demonstrates our strong commitment to environmental protection. This initiative reduces dependence on natural resources while strengthening airport infrastructure. With this step, we are advancing towards our goal of a net-zero airport.”

A Green Leader Among Airports
IGI Airport is not only India’s busiest airport but also one of its greenest. It is the first airport in Asia to achieve Level-5 carbon accreditation from the Airports Council International (ACI), highlighting its leadership in sustainable aviation practices.

Steps Taken to Achieve Water-Positivity

  • Over 625 rainwater harvesting systems have been installed across the campus.
  • Two new groundwater reservoirs add 9 million liters of additional capacity.
  • A zero-liquid-discharge sewage treatment plant processes 16.6 million liters per day, treating 100% of wastewater.
  • Water-saving systems, including sprinklers and drip irrigation, optimize water usage across the premises.

The NITI Aayog–CII evaluation recognized IGI Airport for its comprehensive water measurement, monitoring, and conservation systems, making it a benchmark for sustainable airport operations in India.
