In a sudden political move, Humayun Kabir, leader of the Janata Unnayan Party, revoked the candidacy of social media influencer Nisha Chatterjee from the Bailiganj Assembly seat just 24 hours after announcing her as the party’s candidate. Nisha, expressing her outrage, has threatened legal action, alleging that her removal was due to her Hindu identity.
Kabir had declared Nisha Chatterjee as the party candidate during a public event on Monday. However, he raised objections to some of her social media posts and announced that a Muslim candidate would now be nominated for Bailiganj. Responding to the decision, Nisha accused Kabir of defaming her publicly and indicated she may contest the election as an independent candidate.
Objections Over Social Media Posts
On Tuesday, Humayun Kabir stated that Nisha’s social media posts and behavior were inappropriate for a position in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. He said he would announce a new candidate within a week after consulting local representatives.
Nisha’s Response
Speaking to the media, Nisha Chatterjee said she had been in contact with Kabir since June, following the inauguration of his café. She claimed Kabir invited her to a program on 22 December, promising her a position in the party’s state committee. Nisha said she was taken by surprise when her candidacy was revoked just 24 hours after being announced, citing her social media posts as objectionable.
She further alleged that her removal was religiously motivated, stating, “If his party were truly secular, this would not have happened. I supported his Babri Masjid project, so why did he treat me this way?”
Accusations of Exploitation
Nisha, who became a popular TikTok star after graduating from Jogmaya Devi College in 2018, accused Kabir of using her social media influence for political publicity. She pointed out that she has more followers than him, and claimed that his decision to replace her with a Muslim candidate was an attempt to create religious division.
She emphasized, “I earn my livelihood as an influencer. No one can damage my reputation and get away with it.”
This sudden political controversy has drawn attention to party candidate selection practices and religious considerations in politics, just ahead of the Bailiganj Assembly elections.
