Gurugram: Haryana has created a national record by auctioning India’s most expensive vehicle registration number. The VIP number HR88B8888 was sold for an astonishing ₹1.17 crore, surpassing the price of many luxury cars and becoming the costliest number plate ever purchased in the country.
The bidding for this premium registration number saw unprecedented enthusiasm. According to officials of the Gurugram Authority, 45 applicants competed to secure HR88B8888, triggering a fierce online bidding war.
Online Auction Sees Hyper-Competitive Bidding
Haryana conducts online auctions for VIP and fancy number plates every week. Applicants can register and place bids between Friday 5 PM and Monday 9 AM. The final bidding round continues until Wednesday 5 PM, when results are officially announced.
The auction is held entirely on the official portal fancy.parivahan.gov.in.
Transport Commissioner Atul Kumar said that the bidding process is fully automated and transparent. The base price for HR88B8888 was fixed at ₹50,000, after which the amount kept rising every minute.
- By 12 PM on Wednesday, the bid had already touched ₹88 lakh.
- By 5 PM, it peaked at ₹1.17 crore, making it the winning bid.
Why HR88B8888 Is So Special
Experts say that the digit “8” has exceptionally high demand in VIP registration numbers due to its cultural and symbolic value. The number HR88B8888 contains the digit eight six times, which significantly boosts its perceived prestige.
Interestingly, even the letter ‘B’ in the sequence resembles the number 8, making the registration visually more attractive to buyers who believe in numeric luck or seek exclusivity.
- HR indicates Haryana.
- 88 represents the Badhra sub-division RTO code.
Just last week, another Haryana number — HR22W2222 — was sold for ₹37.91 lakh, showing the rising craze for elite number plates in the state.
