Rohtak, Haryana: In a shocking case of honour killing, a young woman was brutally shot dead by her own brothers in Kahni village, Rohtak district, for marrying an auto-rickshaw driver against her family’s wishes. The victim’s brother-in-law was also seriously injured in the attack and is undergoing treatment at PGIMS Trauma Center. CCTV footage has captured the assailants fleeing the scene.
The Victim and Background
The deceased, Sapna (23), had married Suraj, a local auto-rickshaw driver, three years ago. Her family strongly opposed the union, prompting the couple to initially move to Rohtak city. They later returned to Kahni village, which reportedly caused resentment among her relatives. Sapna and Suraj have a two-year-old son.
The Attack
On Wednesday night, while Suraj was away working, Sapna was at home with her mother, Nirmala, and younger brother, Sahil. Around 9:40 PM, Sapna’s brother Sanju, accompanied by three associates, arrived at the house and opened fire, hitting Sapna five times, killing her on the spot.
When Sahil tried to intervene, he was shot in the chest, sustaining critical injuries. Nirmala managed to pull Sahil inside for safety. The attackers fired an additional four to five rounds at the gate before fleeing. Suraj was not at home during the attack but was informed of the murder afterward. The family belongs to a Scheduled Caste community.
Investigation and Evidence
Rohtak Sadar police visited both the crime scene and PGIMS to investigate. Nirmala revealed that Sahil’s birthday was on the day of the attack, and her grandson’s second birthday was two days later. CCTV cameras installed at the house captured four men approaching and fleeing the premises, one carrying a handgun.
Suraj confirmed to the police that the murder was planned as retaliation for their love marriage, which defied traditional norms in the village. Authorities have launched a thorough investigation into the case.
