Holi 2026 in Rajasthan: Dates, Timings, and Exam Updates Amid Lunar Eclipse

Jaipur: This year, the festival of Holi in Rajasthan has become a subject of considerable debate due to the rare alignment of the lunar eclipse and traditional calendar calculations. With Bhadra period and Purnima tithi adding to the confusion, scholars and devotees are discussing whether Holika Dahan should be celebrated on March 2 or March 3. Parents of schoolchildren are particularly concerned, as final exams for younger students are scheduled around this period.

Holi Schedule for 2026:
According to Rishikesh and Divakar Panchang calculations:

  • Holika Dahan: March 2, 2026 (Monday)
  • Rangwali Holi / Dhulandi: March 4, 2026 (Wednesday)

The Purnima tithi begins at 5:56 PM on March 2 and ends at 5:08 PM on March 3. Hindu scriptures stipulate that Holika Dahan must be performed during Pradosh Kaal (post-sunset) on Purnima. Therefore, astrologers have confirmed that the correct day for Holika Dahan is March 2. Since Chaitra Krishna Pratipada falls on March 4, the main celebration of colors (Dhulandi) will take place that day. March 3 is not suitable for color festivities as Purnima tithi extends into the evening.

Bhadra Timing and Auspiciousness:
Although performing auspicious tasks is generally avoided during Bhadra Kaal, astrologers point out that on March 2, the Bhadra period occurs between 6:22 PM and 8:53 PM, but its “mukh” (critical part) begins after midnight. Hence, Holika Dahan in the evening of March 2 is considered fully safe and auspicious.

Impact of Lunar Eclipse:
This year’s Holi coincides with a lunar eclipse, complicating astrological calculations. Scholars note that depending on whether the eclipse is visible in India, Sutak period rules (pre- and post-eclipse rituals) will apply. In some regions, minor adjustments in Holika Dahan timing may be made to avoid performing the ritual during the eclipse, ensuring its sanctity.

School Exams and Holidays:
The date adjustments for Holi have significant implications for school schedules. Many private schools in Rajasthan have final exams for younger students on March 2, the same day as Holika Dahan. Discussions are underway between the Education Department and private school associations to potentially reschedule exams, allowing children and families to prepare for festival celebrations without conflict.
