Sirmour, January 10, 2026: A tragic bus accident in the Haripur Dhar region of Sirmour district, Himachal Pradesh, claimed 14 lives on Saturday, leaving many questions about accountability and safety standards. The victims included seven women, two children, a father-son duo, and the bus driver, all residents of Kupvi and nearby areas. In addition, 52 passengers were injured and are receiving treatment in various hospitals.
The accident occurred around 3 PM, just 100 meters before Haripur Dhar market, when an overloaded private bus lost control and plunged into a deep gorge. The 39-seater bus was carrying around 66 passengers, significantly exceeding its capacity, a fact acknowledged by a state government minister who described it as “gross negligence.”
Contributing Factors
Preliminary reports suggest multiple factors contributed to the tragedy:
- Overcrowding: The bus was carrying nearly double its capacity.
- Road conditions: The accident site lacked safety parapets along the road edges.
- Weather hazards: Frost and slippery patches due to water and mud may have caused the bus to skid.
Authorities confirmed that all bus documents were valid, including the permit (valid until July 8, 2029), fitness certificate (valid until February 14, 2026), and insurance (valid until February 12, 2026). The Regional Transport Officer, Sona Chandel, stated that a detailed investigation is underway to determine the exact cause.
Government Response
Health Minister Dhani Ram Shandil announced that a committee will be formed to probe the accident. He strongly criticized private operators for overloading vehicles and emphasized that passenger safety must never be compromised, particularly during festive seasons.
Leaders across the country, including President Draupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, and former CM Jairam Thakur, expressed their grief over the tragedy.
The incident raises serious concerns about road safety, vehicle overloading, and preventive measures, prompting calls for stricter enforcement and infrastructure improvements in hilly regions.
