Damoh, Madhya Pradesh: A love story from Hatta in Damoh district has escalated to the doors of the High Court after a newlywed couple faced serious threats for marrying of their own free will. Sayan Agrawal and Arya Mishra solemnized their marriage according to Hindu rituals on December 29, but the bride’s family has reportedly opposed the union, issuing threats to burn Sayan’s shop and implicate him in false criminal cases.
Responding to a petition filed by the couple, the Jabalpur High Court directed the Damoh Superintendent of Police to take all necessary measures to ensure the safety and freedom of the newlyweds. The couple expressed fears of being targeted by the bride’s family and requested police protection. The wife also formally approached the police to ensure her safety at her in-laws’ residence.
The petition stated that the husband and his family were being threatened with false criminal complaints, and there were explicit threats to set fire to the husband’s grocery shop in Hatta. The court noted that both petitioners are adults and married with mutual consent, emphasizing that threats or attempts to intimidate them through false cases are illegal.
During the hearing, the state opposed the petition but could not provide valid arguments against the couple’s right to marry of their own choice. The High Court bench ordered the Damoh SP to take appropriate steps to protect the couple’s life and liberty. Advocate Vishal Daniel represented the petitioners in court.
