Heavy Snowfall Disrupts Life in Kashmir: All Flights at Srinagar Airport Canceled, NH-44 Closed

Srinagar, January 23, 2026: Heavy snowfall in the Kashmir Valley on Friday has blanketed the region in a thick layer of snow, causing major disruption to both air and road transport. Poor visibility and snow accumulation on the runway have forced Srinagar International Airport to suspend all flight operations.

Earlier, 22 flights were canceled, but the situation worsened, prompting authorities to cancel all flights for the day. Passengers have been advised to check the latest flight status with their respective airlines before planning any travel. The airport authorities issued a NOTAM at Delhi Airport and posted updates on social media, urging travelers to remain updated.

IndiGo Airlines issued a travel advisory, stating that flight operations in Srinagar are temporarily suspended due to the snowfall. The airline advised passengers to use rebooking or refund options and remain on standby for clearance once conditions improve.

Road Travel Also Affected
The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) has been closed as a precaution near the Nav-yug Tunnel due to heavy snow. Mughal Road and Sinthan Road are also blocked in several places because of snow accumulation. Traffic authorities have halted vehicles at safe locations to prevent accidents, with reopening decisions to be made once conditions improve.

Impact on Public
Continuous closure of roads and suspension of flights has caused significant inconvenience to travelers. Reports indicate a surge in airfares due to limited services, further adding to public hardship.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that heavy snowfall is continuing in Srinagar and surrounding areas. Authorities have warned that the restoration of normal traffic and transport operations may take longer than expected. People have been advised to avoid non-essential travel and follow weather and safety guidelines.
