Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh: Authorities have deployed a strong police contingent in Sambhal as a land survey is set to begin on an eight-bigha cemetery near Jama Masjid, which is currently occupied by 22 illegally constructed shops and houses. The move comes amid heightened security concerns following past incidents of stone-pelting from these structures.
Security Measures in Place
According to SP Kuldeep Singh, PAC, RAF, and additional police personnel have been stationed in the area. Drone cameras are being used for strict surveillance, and intelligence units including LIU remain on high alert. The survey operation is being coordinated from the Satyavrit Police Station control room. A dedicated team comprising four law officers and 22 revenue officials will conduct the measurement and inspection of the land.
Background of the Dispute
Subhash Tyagi, national coordinator of Kalki Sena and an advocate, filed a complaint with the DM on December 12. He stated that the land was vacant in the 1980s, previously forming a mound, but over the last 20–25 years, illegal encroachments have led to houses and shops being built on the cemetery land. Tyagi also alleged that during the survey on December 24, stone-pelting from the rooftops of these structures sparked violence in the area.
Local Tension Rises
The revenue department team has commenced survey and verification work, and the administration is maintaining strict vigilance throughout the area to prevent any recurrence of unrest. The operation has caused a noticeable stir among local residents, reflecting the sensitivity of the issue.
