Health of Sonam Wangchuk Deteriorates in Jodhpur Jail; Wife Seeks Supreme Court Intervention Over Contaminated Water

Jodhpur: The health of Sonam Wangchuk, who has been imprisoned in Jodhpur Central Jail under the National Security Act (NSA) since September 2025, has come under scrutiny. His wife, Geetanjali Wangchuk, has approached the Supreme Court, raising concerns that her husband is suffering from serious gastrointestinal problems due to contaminated water in the prison.

Supreme Court orders expert medical examination
During a prompt hearing on the petition, the Supreme Court recognized the seriousness of Wangchuk’s condition and directed that he be examined by a specialist doctor, particularly a gastroenterologist, to ensure accurate diagnosis and treatment.

Arguments presented in court
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Geetanjali Wangchuk, informed the court that the quality of water provided in jail is extremely poor, causing continuous stomach issues for Wangchuk. He emphasized that while Wangchuk wishes to consult a specialist, the jail authorities have so far failed to facilitate such an examination.

Sibal requested that Wangchuk receive regular medical check-ups, at least weekly, and that he be provided with clean and safe drinking water supplied by his family to prevent further deterioration of his health.

Response from the Rajasthan government
On behalf of the state, Additional Solicitor General K.M. Nataraj argued that Wangchuk is being regularly monitored. He stated that in the past four months, prison doctors have examined him 21 times, with the latest check-up conducted on 26 January 2026.

Taking note of these arguments, the Supreme Court issued directions to the Jodhpur Jail administration to ensure that Wangchuk undergoes a thorough medical examination by a specialist. Authorities have been instructed to take all necessary steps to safeguard his health.
