Noida: On the night of January 16, a tragic accident claimed the life of 27-year-old engineer Yuvraj Mehta when his car fell into a water-filled pit in Sector 150, Noida. Yuvraj struggled for nearly two hours, calling for help, but could not be rescued in time.
Recalling the heartbreaking incident, Yuvraj’s father, Rajkumar Mehta, said he had been waiting to have dinner with his son that night. Yuvraj had called his father around 10:30 PM while returning home with friends from Gurgaon and assured him, “Dad, I’ll be home in half an hour; get ready, and we’ll have dinner together.” Tragically, Yuvraj never made it home. His friend, Pankaj, recounted that they had left Gurgaon at 9 PM, unaware that the night would end in such a tragedy.
The car was recovered four days later by the NDRF team. Submerged for several days, it was severely damaged, with broken windows and a shattered sunroof—likely caused by the immense water pressure. Authorities are examining the vehicle to determine whether any mechanical fault contributed to the accident.
Following the incident, the Uttar Pradesh government removed Noida CEO Lokesh M from his post. A three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed under the Chief Minister’s orders to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the circumstances of the accident.
The pit into which Yuvraj’s car fell had been dug for a mall’s basement construction. Preliminary reports suggest negligence may have played a role in this tragic event.
